The Brief
Originally, this customer from Long Eaton in Derbyshire had a solid oak, Shaker style kitchen with a separate dining room. The kitchen was solid construction and of good quality but they thought it was dated and the separate dining room wasn’t really used or suited to the family’s lifestyle. They removed a wall to create a much larger open plan kitchen/dining/living space, a more sociable space that the whole family could use and where they could entertain and socialise. Their brief for the new kitchen was sleek, modern and bright.
The Solution
The customer choose the Porter Gloss range of kitchen units in white gloss for their new U shaped kitchen space. The wall with the floor to ceiling bank of units that houses the double oven and fridge are built around and to conceal the underside of the stairs that protrudes into the kitchen.
The worktops and upstand are Star Galaxy, granite. Reminiscent of the night sky these surfaces work beautifully with the white units. The sink is stainless steel under mounted and the kitchen units have a modern bar door handle by Hafele.
The customer retained and refurbished four original units, mainly the corner and units across the back wall. There was no change to the original layout of these units from the original kitchen but the units were given a modern make over with new doors and trims.
Key Design Features
A lovely feature of this kitchen is the curved units on the peninsular that lead into the dining/living area this gives a softer flow from the kitchen. The shelves are a nice detail, they give balance to the kitchen and are in a complimentary black glass.
Top Tips
The customer felt that the quality of their previous kitchen was very good and they wanted to retain/refresh and renovate the original carcasses as far as possible. A handful of units were retained. If you have a good quality kitchen and the units don’t need to be moved it may be worth asking about re-using the carcasses as there will be a cost saving to doing this.
