Shaker is a style of kitchen. From contemporary to classic the “Shaker” recessed panel cabinet style has stood the test of time and is still incredibly popular and versatile.
Shaker design dates back to the 18th century; the simplicity, quality of the timber, craftsmanship and functionality is the essence of a Shaker kitchen. Shaker furniture was indeed developed by the Shakers, a religious sect whose philosophy was simplicity, utility and honesty all of which were reflected in their furniture which was exceptionally well-made and minimalist.
Every piece of furniture that the Shakers crafted was functional and simple. There were no veneers, carvings or decoration of any kind as this would have been considered gratifying. They often used colour to add visual interest.
Today a Shaker style kitchen is available in a huge range of colours; greys, blues, greens and of course, white, ivory and wooden grain textures. Matt and smooth finishes are currently popular and on trend, as a kitchen manufacturer we can make your kitchen in any colour and finish you chose, we often colour match to the Farrow and Ball colour palette. In addition, the can be in-frame or non-framed.
Historically Shakers would have used Cherry wood and Maple to manufacture their furniture, Oak is now a popular choice as it allows the natural grain to show through when painted.
Shaker kitchens never date and look great in a country, cottage kitchen as well as a modern, contemporary kitchen. The colours, worktops and door handles you choose will contribute to the overall look of the kitchen be that contemporary or traditional.
