Focus on Shaker Design

27 September 2023

The ‘Shaker’ design dates back to the 18th century, having been developed by the religious sect named ‘The Shakers’. Their philosophy was simplicity, utility and honesty, all of which was reflected in their furniture, which was exceptionally well-made, functional and simple. It is testament to their wholesome design ethic that it has stood the test of time for centuries and is still one of the most popular kitchen designs in today’s market.

Historically the Shakers would have crafted their kitchens from Cherry or Maple woods. Oak is very popular nowadays as it allows the natural grain to show through when painted. Or of course you can keep a natural wood finish should you prefer.

The Shakers often used colour to add visual interest which is synonymous with current kitchen design. Today the Shaker kitchen is available in a whole host of colours, which can give this very simple design a real wow factor. From coastal blues to industrial greys, classic ivory, moody greens or even a splash of pink, the choice is yours. At Fine Finish we have an on-site spray facility and can paint your kitchen any colour you desire. We often match to popular Farrow and Ball colours and have even colour-matched a customer’s red teapot in the past!

The timeless style makes the Shaker an ever popular choice as they never really date. Many kitchen trends come and go but there has always been a place for the classic Shaker style. The versatility on colour choice, worktops and door handles all contribute to the finished look of the kitchen and can give you either a contemporary or more traditional style. Don’t forget splash-backs and lighting too, both of which can add a real wow factor to the overall finish.

These examples from our portfolio illustrate the versatility of the Shaker style…
